Huawei Proposes New Network Architectures for the AI Era
Huawei has outlined a new framework for network construction in the age of AI, emphasizing "three Rs": Reconstructing network architecture, Redefining business models, and Redefining network operations and maintenance to drive growth.

Huawei is calling for a fundamental shift in network design to accommodate the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Bob Chen, President of Huawei's Optical Business Product Line, presented this vision at the Broadband Development Congress in Vienna. He highlighted the need to evolve network concepts through "three Rs": reconstructing network architecture, redefining business models, and redefining network operations and maintenance.
Chen emphasized that the exponential growth of AI, particularly large AI models, necessitates significant changes in network infrastructure. Network planning must shift focus to the demands of AI services and data centers. Simultaneously, AI technology itself should be leveraged to enhance network operations and maintenance efficiency.
The first "R," "Reconstructing Network Architecture," advocates for a transition from traditional, geographically based networks to data center-centric networks (AIDC). This is driven by AI's immense computational power and data volume requirements, which are increasingly concentrated in large data centers. The city of Zhongwei in China was cited as an example where intelligent computing traffic has become a major network node.
The second principle, "Redefining Business Models," is segmented for enterprises and residential broadband. For businesses, service offerings are expanding beyond mere bandwidth to include "bandwidth + latency + reliability" and integrated IT network services. For residential users, the focus is shifting from basic broadband connectivity towards smart home experiences.
The third "R," "Redefining Network O&M," aims to move network operations and maintenance towards fully automated and intelligent processes. This is crucial for effectively managing the complex and dynamic network environments that AI demands.
