Huawei Proposes Next-Gen OTN for AI-Centric All-Optical Networks

Vienna – At NetworkX 2026, Huawei outlined its vision for building the "LIGHTS" All-Optical Network, proposing a strategy to leverage AI-driven opportunities. The company identified three key areas for operators: hyperscaler data center interconnection, private lines for enterprise computing power, and integrated computing and network services.

Huawei suggests that the role of optical transport is shifting from serving consumer needs to becoming a business network for enterprises and AI applications. To facilitate this transition, the company is advocating for an AI-centric all-optical network powered by its Next Generation OTN solution.

Gavin Gu, president of Huawei's Optical Transmission Network Domain, detailed the Next Generation OTN solution, which addresses both DCI (Data Center Interconnect) and DCA (Data Center Access) scenarios. The solution offers ultra-high speeds up to 2 Tbps for DCI, with a focus on low latency, intelligent operations, green technology, high reliability, Tbps capacity, and security assurance.

Furthermore, the proposal includes building an end-to-end "zero-outage network," featuring OXC (Optical Cross-Connect) for direct connectivity and quantum encryption capabilities. Huawei believes this infrastructure will enable operators to offer differentiated services and achieve significant business growth by capitalizing on AI advancements.
