Huawei reinstates 'Smart Rotation' feature in HarmonyOS 7.0

Huawei has updated its HarmonyOS 7.0 platform to include a dual-sensor based screen rotation feature on the Mate 90 series.

4 November 2026

Huawei has officially restored its 'Smart Rotation' feature as part of the HarmonyOS 7.0 update for its Mate 90 flagship smartphone series. The system moves beyond traditional gravity-based sensors by integrating front-facing sensors to track user orientation and facial positioning.

This system-level capability allows the device to calculate the optimal display orientation based on the user's line of sight, preventing unwanted rotations when a user is lying down or holding the device at unconventional angles. By implementing this at the OS level, Huawei ensures that third-party applications automatically inherit these rotation capabilities without requiring individual developers to integrate specific facial recognition tools.

The feature was first introduced in 2019 with the Mate 30 series and appeared on successive flagship models through the P50 Pro. The capability was notably omitted from the Mate 50 series and subsequent models before this latest re-implementation.
