Huawei showcases 7.2Tbps near-package optics module for AI infrastructure

Huawei has unveiled a new 7.2-terabit-per-second (Tbps) near-package optics (NPO) module intended for AI infrastructure. The company claims this represents an industry first for such a module, designed to improve connectivity speeds within AI clusters.

The module integrates 36 channels, each operating at a rate of 200 gigabits per second (Gbps). Near-package optics technology positions optical components closer to switching chips. This proximity aims to reduce signal loss and power consumption, which is critical for efficiently connecting a growing number of processors in AI systems.

Huawei emphasized that the product is still in the development phase. The company indicated that any potential volume production will depend on the readiness of the supply chain and manufacturing capabilities. No specific timeline for production commencement was provided.
