Tech company Huawei has launched the Ascend 960 SuperPoD, an AI infrastructure system incorporating Near-Packaged Optics (NPO) technology. The company states the solution is designed to address the growing demand for computing power and data transfer speeds required by increasingly large AI models.

Huawei's Deputy Chairman Wang Tao presented the system at HUAWEI CONNECT 2026. Traditional AI computing approaches often face bottlenecks when models scale to trillions of parameters, limiting performance. The Ascend 960 SuperPoD aims to overcome this by connecting up to 4,096 NPU cards into a unified memory system that operates as a single entity.

The system utilizes NPO technology, which integrates optical components closer to the processors. This shortens the distance for high-speed electrical signals, aiming to reduce latency, power consumption, and improve connection density compared to traditional setups. Huawei claims the Ascend 960 SuperPoD can reduce power consumption by over 550kW compared to an equivalent solution using conventional optical modules.

The company emphasizes this represents a shift from chip-level competition to system-level competition in AI. This approach considers the integration of chips, interconnects, storage, and system architecture as crucial for performance. Huawei views this type of large-scale, coordinated infrastructure as foundational for future AI applications, including autonomous driving and advanced device intelligence.
