Huawei Unveils Next-Generation Energy Storage Platform

Huawei has unveiled its LUTERRA Smart String Grid-Forming ESS platform, developed with advanced technological innovations designed to increase efficiency, reliability, and operational value for energy investments. The company showcased the solution at Intersolar Europe last month in Germany.

The LUTERRA platform features grid-forming (GFM) capabilities, enabling stability and intelligent management in modern power grids. Steve Zheng, President of Smart ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, explained the company's approach to developing an energy storage solution that balances high efficiency with ease of deployment.

The grid-forming technology has been validated in practical applications, including the 100% renewable-powered microgrid project at The Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. This installation, operating for over two years, demonstrates the technology's ability to coordinate multiple distributed energy resources on a gigawatt-hour scale.

Zheng highlighted that the platform's advanced features, such as industry-leading round-trip efficiency (RTE), precise state-of-charge (SOC) management, and optimized cell-to-pack architecture, stem from expertise across electrochemistry, electrical engineering, and control systems. Huawei reports 93.1% efficiency on the low-voltage side of the PCS.

Despite its sophisticated technology, Huawei emphasized simplified installation, transportation, and deployment. The LUTERRA platform can reduce delivery times by at least 30% and lower balance of plant (BOP) costs by a minimum of 20% compared to traditional solutions.
