Brasilia, Brazil – The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 smartwatch is bringing laboratory-level sports science to runners in Brazil. Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge wore the timepiece during the NB42K Porto Alegre marathon on July 12, symbolizing a fusion of technology and elite athletics.
Kipchoge, a two-time Olympic champion and widely regarded as the greatest marathoner, collaborated with dsm-firmenich's high-performance team in the development of the smartwatch. Historically, elite runners relied on costly professional equipment and coaching for precise route tracking and endurance analysis. With the Watch GT Runner 2, Huawei aims to provide similar accuracy and specialized modes, such as the "Intelligent Marathon" mode, to all runners.
The watch's "Intelligent Marathon" mode offers features beneficial for race day, in addition to supporting World Athletics-approved training. A virtual pacer calculates real-time deviations from the target pace and displays an avatar providing guidance on the necessary speed kilometer by kilometer. This feature, previously largely exclusive to professionals, now assists amateur runners in optimizing their performance.
Kipchoge's participation in the marathon with the watch highlights a device developed to merge an elite athlete's experience with technological innovation.
