Humane Society of Southern Arizona Launches Choice-Based Pet Pantry
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is opening a client-choice pet food pantry in Tucson on November 18, allowing owners to select specific supplies.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) will open its new client-choice pet pantry, Dart Mart, on November 18. Operating from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the facility allows pet owners to browse and select food and supplies in a manner modeled after traditional human food pantries.
By moving away from pre-packaged distribution, the organization aims to reduce waste and ensure that families receive items suited to their specific pets. This model reflects a shift toward dignity-based support, allowing pet owners to address their unique household needs without the constraints of standardized rations.
As economic pressures continue to impact pet retention, local shelters are increasingly implementing these pantries as a frontline prevention strategy. The goal is to keep pets in their homes by mitigating the financial burden of pet ownership for families in the Tucson area.
