Humane World for Animals rescues nearly 1,000 chinchillas from Ohio breeding facility
Humane World for Animals has removed 951 chinchillas from a commercial breeding operation in Ohio following federal intervention regarding repeated animal welfare violations.

Humane World for Animals completed the removal of 951 chinchillas from the R & R Chinchilla facility in Jenera, Ohio, on November 3. The rescue was conducted at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice after long-term investigations revealed consistent violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
Upon rescue, the animals were transported to an undisclosed location for medical assessment. Veterinary examinations identified a range of health issues, including overgrown teeth, severe skin inflammation, matted fur, and missing limbs or ears. The organization is currently providing rehabilitative care to the animals.
Laura Koivula, director of animal crimes and investigations, stated that the conditions at the facility contrasted sharply with the natural requirements of the species. Humane World for Animals is now coordinating with rescue partners to rehome the chinchillas. The organization continues to advocate against the commercial breeding of wild animals, citing systemic welfare risks inherent in the pet and fur trade.
