Hungarian Air Force Marks Two Decades of Gripen Operations

On March 21, 2026, the Hungarian Air Force commemorated two decades of service for its Gripen fighter fleet. The arrival of the first aircraft at Kecskemét Air Base in 2006 signaled the start of a strategic partnership with Saab that transformed the nation's aviation capabilities.

The procurement of the aircraft followed Hungary's 1999 accession to NATO, serving as a catalyst for replacing legacy Soviet-era equipment. By opting for a leasing agreement for 14 Gripen C/D aircraft, the Hungarian military sought to align its operations with Alliance standards.

Over the past 20 years, the fleet has undergone significant technical enhancements, including the integration of air-to-air refueling and advanced precision strike systems. These developments have allowed the Hungarian Air Force to transition into a flexible, interoperable force capable of fulfilling diverse international commitments.
