Hydroponic container farming startup FarmBox Foods files for bankruptcy

FarmBox Foods, a startup that converted shipping containers into hydroponic farms, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on October 19. The company reported $4.4 million in liabilities against $1.6 million in assets. The filing follows multiple lawsuits alleging that the firm failed to deliver farming systems for which customers had already provided payment.

The bankruptcy comes despite a period of reported growth. CEO Rusty Walker stated the company reached $1.3 million in revenue in 2026, surpassing its combined earnings for 2024 and 2025. Industry observers suggest this scenario highlights a common trap for manufacturing startups: high revenue does not equate to positive cash flow, particularly when expansion costs for labor and raw materials outpace actual income.

Founded in 2017, the company gained national prominence for its container-based growing systems, which promised lower water usage and faster crop cycles. Despite this profile, the firm struggled to maintain the operational efficiency required to sustain its business model, leading to the current liquidation process.
