Hyundai Factory Workers Strike Over Humanoid Robot Deployment

Thousands of unionized Hyundai auto workers walked off the job in South Korea after negotiations with the automaker broke down over plans to introduce humanoid robots. This represents a significant pushback from organized labor against the latest wave of robotic automation.

The partial strike at Hyundai's auto production complex in Ulsan is reportedly the automotive industry's first factory stoppage addressing humanoid robots. Workers have already shortened their day and night shifts by two hours from July 13-15 and plan further four-hour strikes from July 20-22, following 15 failed negotiation rounds.

The union's opposition began when Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the latest version of the Atlas humanoid robot earlier this year. Standing over 6 feet tall and capable of lifting more than 100 pounds, the robot is built by Boston Dynamics, a US robotics firm now becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai.

The workers' primary concerns revolve around potential job displacement and the impact of robot integration on their working conditions and wages. The union is seeking guarantees that automation will not lead to layoffs. Negotiations are expected to continue in an effort to find a resolution that balances technological advancement with worker interests.
