Hyundai Motor Group has announced its acquisition of SoftBank Group's remaining approximately 10% stake in the U.S. robotics company Boston Dynamics. This transaction makes Boston Dynamics a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hyundai conglomerate. The company stated that the move will facilitate the broader deployment of advanced robotics technology across its various business operations.

The transaction value was not disclosed, but reports from South Korean media last month suggested a valuation of around 500 billion Korean won (approximately $440 million USD). Following the completion of the acquisition, Hyundai Motor Group will gain greater strategic autonomy in managing Boston Dynamics. This is expected to allow for more flexible long-term investment planning, business strategies, and major decisions such as a future initial public offering.

Hyundai Motor plans to begin deploying Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot at a manufacturing plant in Georgia, USA, starting in 2028. Initially, Atlas will be tasked with duties such as sorting automotive parts. By around 2030, its responsibilities are expected to expand to encompass broader manufacturing processes, including assembly operations.

The acquisition occurs amidst escalating annual wage negotiations between Hyundai Motor's labor unions in South Korea and the company. Union representatives have voiced concerns that the increasing application of robots and artificial intelligence on production lines could impact future employment. They suggest that the company may be planning to gradually replace human roles with new technologies.

Hyundai Motor initially purchased an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021. Since the announcement, Hyundai Motor's stock price has shown no significant movement, with investors focusing more on the valuation of Boston Dynamics indicated by the deal.
