Hyundai Workers Strike Over Wages and Robot Integration

Production workers at Hyundai Motor Company's South Korea plant commenced a three-day partial strike on July 14, following a breakdown in negotiations over wages and bonuses. The action, set to conclude on July 15, marks the second consecutive year of labor disputes, with this year's talks also addressing the increasing integration of advanced robots and artificial intelligence (AI) into production.

The current conflict highlights a growing concern among union members regarding job security amid Hyundai's plans to deploy AI-powered humanoid robots. The company intends to introduce Atlas robots, developed by its subsidiary Boston Dynamics, into U.S. manufacturing facilities by 2028. These robots are initially slated for repetitive tasks, with more complex duties planned by 2030.

The Metal Workers' Union's Hyundai Motor branch is demanding a base pay increase of 149,600 South Korean won per month, approximately equivalent to $100 USD. They also seek bonuses totaling 30 percent of the company's previous year's net profit. Hyundai counter-offered with an 89,000 won base pay raise, bonuses equivalent to 350 percent of a worker's monthly salary, an additional 10 million won in cash, and 15 company shares, but the union rejected this proposal.

While last year's strike focused primarily on wage disparities, this year's action underscores a broader tension within the manufacturing sector concerning the impact of automation and AI on employment. The union has stated that no robots utilizing new technology will be introduced without an agreement between labor and management on their implementation and effects on the workforce.
