Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung drives digital transformation through efficiency and reader engagement
German local newspaper Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung has successfully shifted focus to digital offerings and boosted reader engagement while reshaping its growth. Managing Director Matthias Litzenburger shared insights on the publication's digital transformation.

German local newspaper Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung has demonstrated significant progress in its digital transformation since 2023, strategically converting unprofitable distribution areas into digital subscriptions. Managing Director Matthias Litzenburger reported that 90 percent of subscribers have been retained a year after the shift. Concurrently, the reach and engagement of the publication's digital offerings have grown by 50 percent over the last two years.
The newspaper highlights strong direct traffic, accounting for nearly 90 percent of its website visits, indicating robust reader loyalty. While print circulation sees a slight decline, the newspaper is experiencing substantial growth in its directly paid, non-IVW-reported (PUR) subscriptions. This strategic direction is projected to result in a stable paying customer base by 2025, offering long-term security and perspective.
Litzenburger identifies a clear, house-wide strategy as a key success factor. The decision to develop proprietary digital products, coupled with strategic partnerships, has proven fruitful. The team's blend of experience, creativity, and execution capability, combined with cross-functional teams and agile working methods—try, learn, and persistently move forward—has effectively driven the digital transition.
For other local publishers, Litzenburger advocates for collaboration and resource pooling, emphasizing the importance for smaller entities to learn from one another. The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, are viewed as key technologies poised to significantly impact the industry and offer new opportunities.
The growth and engagement reported by Ibbenbürener Volkszeitung in the digital sphere offer a valuable model for other regional publishers navigating a rapidly evolving media landscape.
