IBM AI Handles 94% of HR Queries, Yet Company Plans to Increase Hiring

IBM has developed an AI assistant, AskHR, which now handles 94 percent of the company's routine human resources inquiries. This level of automation represents a significant achievement, yet IBM has announced plans to triple its entry-level hiring in the United States for 2026.

The strategic decision to increase hiring stems from the remaining 6 percent of queries that require human judgment, ethical considerations, and exception handling, which the AI cannot manage. This highlights that the core value of human employees often lies beyond routine tasks and resides in their ability to navigate complex situations.

IBM's experience is not unique. Recent data from Robert Half indicates that 32 percent of U.S. hiring managers have eliminated roles due to AI, only to rehire for similar positions later. In the finance sector, this figure rises to 44 percent.

Research by Orgvue further supports this trend, finding that 55 percent of leaders who reduced staff for AI implementation now consider it a mistake. Gartner projects that by 2027, half of companies that cut jobs for AI will be rehiring similar roles.

These developments offer a critical lesson for businesses considering AI adoption. A thorough mapping of job functions and the identification of roles requiring human judgment must precede any workforce reductions to avoid potential future rehiring needs.
