IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a joint venture company owned by Boeing and General Motors. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the current quarter.
The acquisition is intended to bolster IBM's quantum computing expertise, particularly in silicon spin qubit engineering. HRL's advanced technologies are also expected to contribute to IBM's innovations in quantum sensing and drive new research in quantum materials.
HRL Laboratories brings a wealth of technical assets, including expertise in advanced sensors, high-speed and high-power communications, electronics, advanced manufacturing, and materials science.
IBM's quantum computing roadmap includes the planned delivery of IBM Quantum Starling in 2029, capable of performing 100 million quantum operations. The company anticipates launching the Blue Jay quantum computer, with an order of magnitude higher computing power, around 2035.
Hughes Research Laboratories (HRL), founded in 1960, became a joint venture between General Motors and Boeing in 1997. The company has focused on applied research in areas such as advanced sensors and high-speed communications.
