ICE arrests nearly 50,000 people in July

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended close to 50,000 individuals in July, reaching the highest monthly arrest figure during the second Trump administration. New figures reveal a significant increase in enforcement actions compared to previous months.

The July arrest tally of 49,571 represents a 15% rise from the 43,021 arrests made in June and a substantial 70% increase from the 29,241 arrests in February. Government data provided by ICE to the Deportation Data Project at UC Berkeley and analyzed by the Associated Press indicate a sustained surge in operations.

The administration has continued its mass deportation agenda, shifting tactics from high-profile operations in major cities to less conspicuous but still disruptive arrests. ICE officers have increasingly conducted arrests during traffic stops and have expanded reliance on state and local law enforcement partners to carry out immigration enforcement duties.

Texas and Florida accounted for nearly 20,000 of the July arrests, highlighting their crucial role in the administration's deportation strategy. Both states leverage 287g agreements, which allow local and state law enforcement to act as extensions of federal immigration enforcement.

Despite earlier suggestions from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin of a less prominent approach, the latest figures indicate a continuation of President Trump's emphasis on mass deportations, albeit through modified operational methods. The agency has reportedly hired thousands of new officers to support these efforts.
