ICE Considers Electrified Gloves for Agents

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is exploring the possibility of acquiring specialized gloves that can deliver electric shocks to individuals. The plan, outlined in a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice, suggests a potential expenditure of up to $20 million for the devices, with delivery expected by March 2027.

The gloves, identified as CTG 5 GLOVE, are developed by Compliant Technologies. The manufacturer describes them as "Conductive Distraction and De-escalation" (CD3) devices, which they market as "humane" and "low-optics" solutions.

ICE aims to equip agents with these gloves as a new method for managing situations and controlling subjects, potentially reducing the need for more forceful interventions or traditional weaponry. The agency suggests the technology could enhance officer safety and provide an alternative de-escalation tool.

The proposed acquisition has drawn attention and potential criticism regarding the use of such devices. Concerns have been raised by advocacy groups about the ethical implications and the possibility of misuse, particularly in interactions with vulnerable populations.
