ICY DOCK Technology Inc. has identified a potential compatibility issue affecting its ToughArmor MB699VP-B and MB601VK-B HBA enclosures when used with specific Intel and Broadcom Tri-mode HBA and RAID cards.

The problem arises because manufacturers of Tri-mode cards use a different pinout configuration than typically employed for U.2 connections. When these Tri-mode cards are used with U.2 NVMe drives, a U.2 enabler cable is required for the Tri-mode card to detect the U.2 drive, reverting the pinout to standard U.2 specifications.

ICY DOCK advises users to utilize appropriate U.2 enabler cables for PCIe/NVMe connections to ensure REFCLK, sideband, and PCIe signals are routed correctly to the backplane connectors. The company warns that using standard 12Gb/s SAS cables for NVMe connections could lead to damage to the PCIe adapter or the drive.

The issue is currently known to affect a list of specific Tri-mode HBA and RAID card models. ICY DOCK directs customers to consult their HBA or RAID card manufacturer for further details on compatible U.2 enabler cables.
