Game developer id Software has confirmed it experienced employee layoffs related to broader organizational changes within Microsoft's Xbox division. Previous reports had suggested significant workforce reductions, with some claims indicating up to half of the staff were affected.

In a statement, the studio clarified that the changes have been distributed across various teams. However, id Software emphasizes that its current team configuration is sufficient to support the development of its signature games and technologies. The studio noted that its present team size is comparable to when it developed the 2016 title Doom.

Microsoft, which acquired ZeniMax Media and its subsidiary id Software in 2020, has been implementing various cost-saving measures and adjustments across its gaming portfolio. This follows a trend of consolidation and downsizing within the broader video game industry.

The studio stated it will continue its established work in developing games and technology and looks forward to engaging with its community at QuakeCon in August. id Software is renowned for its Doom and Quake franchises.
