IELTS exams were widely canceled in China on October 10 due to technical reasons, affecting thousands of students and interrupting some tests mid-session. Cancellations are expected to continue through October 12.

IELTS exams, administered by the British Council, were broadly canceled across China on October 10 owing to technical issues. Some candidates received cancellation notices while waiting to test, while others were stopped mid-exam. The cancellations are expected to extend through October 12, according to the British Council.

The testing body emailed participants stating that the computer-delivered tests on October 10 were canceled due to technical malfunctions. All exam fees are to be fully refunded. Although some tests were partially completed, no results will be issued. The disruptions also affect upcoming examinations, causing concern for students needing results quickly for university applications.

Many students had traveled from afar for the exams and incurred expenses for accommodation. The British Council has not announced any arrangements for compensation for travel or lodging costs, nor priority for rescheduling. Candidates are advised to contact their target institutions directly to explain their situation.

Industry analysts noted that while sudden test cancellations are not unprecedented, widespread mid-exam halts are uncommon. The situation highlights the challenges faced by online testing systems in adapting to current technological environments. IELTS is progressively transitioning to a fully computer-delivered format, with paper-based tests set to cease entirely in mainland China by September 2026.
