IFS Index: AI Use on Factory Floor Surges, Outpacing Leadership Strategy

The IFS Industrial Index 2026 reveals a gap between frontline AI adoption and executive strategy, with operational teams driving significant gains.

13 October 2026

Industrial frontline teams are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence to solve critical challenges and achieve cost savings, according to the new IFS Industrial Index 2026. The research indicates these teams are seeing substantial gains in reliability and performance, potentially up to 90%.

The index surveyed over 2,200 senior decision-makers across 14 countries. It highlights a growing divide between operational execution and C-suite strategy regarding AI. While frontline workers are leveraging operational data effectively, leadership is still focusing on AI governance, safety, and scaling.

This divergence suggests that while AI is being practically applied at the operational level, strategic alignment and broader implementation plans are lagging. The focus for leadership appears to be on establishing frameworks for responsible and large-scale AI deployment.

IFS suggests that companies need to accelerate their strategic planning to keep pace with the practical application of AI by frontline teams. This will ensure that the benefits of AI are realized efficiently and safely across the entire organization.
