Imaginary Forces designs abstract title sequence for HBO's War

Imaginary Forces, the production studio known for its work on Stranger Things and Mad Men, has released a new title sequence for the HBO legal drama War. The sequence aims to visually represent the show's core conflict—a high-stakes divorce—through abstract, kinetic brushwork rather than literal storytelling.

Creative director Ronnie Koff noted that the development process involved transitioning from traditional physical painting to digital workflows using Procreate. The visual language centers on a black, white, and red color palette, which Koff uses to suggest the push-and-pull dynamic of a boxing match, symbolizing the adversarial relationship between the show's lead characters.

The sequence incorporates a three-dimensional texture, referencing the legacy of influential title designs from the 1990s. Koff highlighted the difficulty of maintaining viewer engagement in an era where streaming platforms allow users to skip intros, necessitating a design that feels distinct and visually aggressive.

By framing the sequence as a battle of abstract strokes, the studio aims to mirror the characters' wealth and emotional volatility. This project continues the studio's focus on integrating narrative-driven design into television title sequences.
