IMARC: AI Data Center Equipment Manufacturing Presents Growth Opportunity in India

The growing demand for high-performance data centers, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), presents a significant industrial opportunity in India. IMARC Group's report highlights that with India's rapidly expanding data center market, local manufacturing of AI-ready equipment—such as racks, power distribution units, and cooling systems—is a timely investment prospect.

The report estimates that the investment cost for a diversified manufacturing facility, producing items like racks, power distribution units, and cooling systems, could range from INR 50 crore to INR 500 crore. The level of machinery, raw materials, and automation influences the total expenditure. While components like steel and copper form a significant portion of operating costs, efficient engineering, sourcing, and quality control can yield net profit margins of 8% to 15% and an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 16% to 24%.

India's data center capacity is projected to multiply significantly by 2029, with electrical and cooling systems accounting for a substantial share of the capital expenditure. According to IMARC Group, AI-ready data center infrastructure build costs are around INR 70–95 crore per megawatt, signaling strong demand for locally manufactured components. The typical payback period for these investments is between 3.5 to 5 years.

Preferred states for establishing manufacturing plants include Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Successful operations will require robust engineering capabilities, effective factory testing, and approvals from major data center operators and colocation providers. The report provides an in-depth analysis of market demand, production processes, necessary machinery and raw materials, and financial viability for potential investors.
