Inca Trail 1 Day Trek: A Complete Guide

Tour operator Altitude Peru has released a comprehensive guide detailing a one-day trek along the Inca Trail, designed for travelers with limited time or who prefer a less strenuous experience.

The shortened trek begins at Kilometer 104 and concludes at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), providing initial views of Machu Picchu. The approximately 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) trail takes about 6-7 hours to complete and is described as well-maintained with moderate difficulty due to some steep sections.

Similar to the full Inca Trail, this one-day option requires a permit, with a daily limit of 500 people including guides and porters. Advance booking through a licensed tour operator or the Peruvian government is essential. Hiring a professional guide is mandatory for safety and preservation purposes, with guides providing historical and cultural insights.

Altitude Peru advises trekkers to pack essentials such as sturdy hiking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a rain jacket, a small backpack with water and snacks, and a camera. Light packing is encouraged. The route passes through forests and includes visits to sites like the Wiñay Wayna ruins.

The provided sample itinerary outlines an early start with transportation from Cusco to the train station, a train to the trailhead at Km 104, the hike, exploration of Machu Picchu, and return transport to Cusco in the evening.
