India Considers Hardware Security Layer for Satellite Broadband Operators

Indian authorities are exploring the development of a hardware security device to monitor traffic routed through satellite internet providers operating in the country. The proposed technology would act as a gateway between subscribers and satellite networks, enabling the government to exercise oversight over data flows from foreign entities like Starlink, Reliance Jio, and OneWeb.

This move comes as major satellite operators seek final regulatory clearances to launch commercial services. While these companies have obtained Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licences, they remain subject to pending security assessments before spectrum allocation can be finalised. The government is reportedly considering utilizing public sector research units alongside private partners to develop the infrastructure.

Security concerns regarding foreign-controlled communications networks have gained prominence following reports of service disruptions in conflict zones internationally. Indian regulators emphasize that the proposal aims to ensure long-term service continuity and data sovereignty, though technical specifications and implementation timelines remain under discussion.
