India Mental Health Alliance Centers Lived Experience in Care
The India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA) is emphasizing the importance of input from individuals with lived experience to shape mental healthcare practices. The organization has also released an anthology of personal mental health journeys.

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating the perspectives of individuals who have experienced mental health challenges into the design and delivery of care. IMHA represents a network of over 400 organizations across 30 Indian states.
The alliance was founded on the principle that mental health is a national developmental priority requiring collective responsibility for a robust care system. Over the past two years, IMHA has trained more than 3,380 mental health professionals and mobilized its member organizations to embed expertise derived from lived experience into practice.
"These lived experiences offer a crucial source of knowledge regarding the practical realities of mental healthcare. IMHA believes that combining clinical expertise with insights from lived experience is essential for developing a more equitable mental health ecosystem responsive to diverse needs," stated Dr. Kavita Arora, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and Founding Cohort Member of IMHA.
To support this initiative, IMHA is developing a collaborative Knowledge Hub designed to make information accessible from various sources, including practitioner insights, field lessons, clinical expertise, and locally grounded academic research.
As part of its effort to amplify lived experience as expertise, IMHA has published "Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing & Wholeness." This anthology features first-person accounts from 11 women leaders navigating severe mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, and anxiety, offering insights into societal understanding and responses to mental health issues.
