India, Spain to Fast-Track Talks on Linking UPI With Bizum

India and Spain are set to fast-track technical discussions regarding the interoperability of their respective mobile payment systems: India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Spain's Bizum. The commitment to accelerate these talks was announced following a meeting between Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his Spanish counterparts during Goyal's European tour.

The initiative aims to explore potential integration between the two popular payment platforms. UPI, a widely adopted instant payment system in India, has been expanding its international presence, with existing interoperability agreements in several countries. Spain's Bizum, operated by a consortium of Spanish banks, also seeks to enhance its cross-border capabilities.

While both sides have agreed to advance the technical discussions, no commercial agreements or pilot programs have been established yet. The scope of potential integration, including whether it will cover peer-to-peer transactions, retail payments, or larger merchant settlements, remains to be determined.

This development is part of India's broader strategy to promote the global adoption of UPI. Spain's interest in collaboration follows similar initiatives by Bizum to expand its international reach, including existing partnerships within Europe. The success of these accelerated talks could pave the way for enhanced financial connectivity between India and Spain.
