India Surpasses Global Markets as Largest User Base for ChatGPT
India has become the largest market for ChatGPT by weekly active users, with the local user base doubling since January.
OpenAI India Managing Director Prabhjeet Singh stated that the rapid growth is tied to increased integration of the chatbot into daily professional workflows. To maintain this momentum, the company is prioritizing Android-first product development and broadening its support for regional Indian languages.
OpenAI is building significant operational infrastructure to support this growth. The company has partnered with TCS’ HyperVault to secure 100 megawatts of data capacity, addressing local data residency requirements. Following the opening of a Delhi office, OpenAI plans to expand into Mumbai and Bengaluru to better serve enterprise clients and developers.
Furthermore, the company is testing an advertising model in India through a partnership with Razorpay. Singh noted that while these ads will support free and low-cost access, they are designed to remain separate from the AI’s generative responses to ensure neutrality. OpenAI is currently engaging with local regulatory and financial institutions to establish security standards for AI deployment.
