India to release draft AI regulations in November
India's Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that a consultation paper on AI regulation is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026, Indian Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the government is preparing a consultation paper on artificial intelligence. The release of this document, expected as early as November, signals a formal move toward establishing a legal framework for AI in India.
While officials have previously indicated the potential for a dedicated AI law to replace or augment the Information Technology Act of 2000, the exact legislative vehicle remains under discussion. Minister Vaishnaw noted that current rapid advancements in technology necessitate a framework that extends beyond the scope of statutes enacted over two decades ago.
The proposed policy aims to reconcile the promotion of innovation with human safety requirements. Vaishnaw highlighted the necessity of global collaboration to set fundamental principles for AI governance, drawing parallels to international agreements in the nuclear industry. The ministry intends to solicit feedback from civil society, individual citizens, and various industry stakeholders, including the finance and manufacturing sectors, to ensure the regulations address practical risks.
