Indian AI Startups Shift Focus to Data Infrastructure and Applications

India's artificial intelligence sector is transitioning from creating general-purpose models to building the underlying infrastructure, data, and specialized applications necessary for AI to function effectively within the country and provide Indian companies a competitive edge globally.

The Indian government is actively supporting this shift through the IndiaAI Mission, allocating approximately ₹10,300 crore (about $1.2 billion USD). This initiative backs around 20 indigenous sovereign AI model proposals, establishes a public dataset platform, and offers subsidized GPU access for startups, addressing key constraints in data and compute power.

A new wave of AI founders is focusing on problems requiring deep domain expertise rather than solely competing on general model development. Some are creating data infrastructure to enable machines to understand the physical world, while others are developing inference platforms capable of operating across India's diverse languages and tools tailored for local enterprises and consumers. This strategic focus on unique capabilities, such as proprietary datasets and local language proficiency, could offer India a distinct advantage.

The sector's growth is attracting significant capital. According to Inc42, Indian AI startups raised $676 million in the first six months of 2026, a nearly fourfold increase compared to the same period last year. To commemorate India's 80th Independence Day, Inc42 highlighted five emerging ventures representing this new direction in India's AI landscape.
