Indian authority launches tools to simplify Aadhaar face authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched its "Face Auth SDK & Sandbox," a suite of software tools and a testing environment aimed at simplifying the integration of Aadhaar face authentication into digital services. The announcement was made during the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai.

The SDK and sandbox provide developers with ready-made software components and a controlled environment to build and test face authentication-based services before public release. UIDAI characterizes the offering as a "plug-and-play" solution designed to enable secure and frictionless face authentication.

This initiative is expected to streamline the adoption of Aadhaar face authentication for various applications, including customer verification, telecom enrollment, and onboarding of gig workers. While face authentication has been an option for Aadhaar since 2018, this launch focuses on making the technology more accessible for developers and businesses.

The development is part of UIDAI's broader strategy to transition Aadhaar services from paper-based and in-person processes to digital verification. The authority currently handles approximately 100 million authentications daily and is scaling its infrastructure to support 250-300 million daily authentications. Artificial intelligence is being extensively used for fraud detection.

UIDAI has also been enhancing the security of face authentication, introducing measures against spoofing with manipulated images and deepfakes. The expansion of the Aadhaar app, which facilitates digital identity verification and selective data sharing, further supports the government's push towards digitizing services and reducing reliance on physical documents.
