Indian E-commerce Sellers Face Rising Costs Ahead of Festive Season
India's marketplace sellers encounter tighter margins as revised penalty structures and logistics surcharges offset commission-free initiatives.

E-commerce sellers in India are facing a challenging fiscal environment as the festive shopping season approaches. While major marketplaces like Flipkart and Amazon have introduced commission-free models to attract more participants, the associated costs of business are rising. Platform-imposed penalties for cancellations and delays, alongside increased logistics fees, are currently exerting significant pressure on seller profitability.
Flipkart's strategy to remove commissions on fashion has led to a surge in new seller registrations, but the platform has simultaneously implemented a strict penalty system charging ₹30 for delayed shipments and ₹60 for cancellations. Meanwhile, Amazon has adopted a tiered penalty structure linked to order value, which can reach up to 10% of the total transaction price, further complicating expense management for smaller merchants.
Logistics costs are also trending upward, with increased closing fees and surcharges being introduced to manage delivery complexities. Market observers note that these additional costs, combined with a dip in discretionary consumer spending, are creating a difficult environment for sellers operating on thin margins. The struggle is exacerbated by a perceived lack of transparency in contesting unfair penalty charges, leaving many vendors with limited recourse.
