Indian Electric Two-Wheeler Registrations Rise in October

Electric two-wheeler (E2W) registrations in India climbed to 214,654 units in October, a 2.9% increase from September's 208,688 units. While the growth rate slowed compared to the previous month, the sector saw a 48.1% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Vahan database.

Market performance diverged significantly among manufacturers. TVS Motor maintained its lead, increasing registrations by 7.4% to reach a 27.2% market share. Hero MotoCorp reported the strongest growth among top-tier firms, rising 17.5% to capture 13.4% of the market. Conversely, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Ola Electric all experienced declines in registration volumes during the month.

Supply chain and capacity constraints remain a primary hurdle for the sector. Ather Energy reported losing approximately 20,000 potential monthly sales due to production limits at its Hosur facility. Similarly, Bajaj Auto executives noted that manufacturing limitations capped deliveries at 75% of their planned volume. In response, major players, including TVS and Bajaj, have announced capacity expansion projects scheduled through 2027.

The industry continues to struggle with balancing high demand—evidenced by significant pre-order backlogs—against limited manufacturing output. Manufacturers are now focusing on aggressive capital investment to increase installed capacity over the coming quarters.
