Indian Enterprise AI Market Shifts Towards Vertical Models

India's enterprise AI landscape is witnessing a significant shift towards specialized, vertical models, a trend reminiscent of the Software as a Service (SaaS) sector's earlier development. Companies like Razorpay, Fractal, and BharatGen are introducing their own domain-specific AI solutions tailored for industries such as finance, healthcare, agriculture, and legal services.

This move towards specialization is driven by the limitations of general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs). While models like ChatGPT and Claude are powerful, they can be over-engineered and costly for specific business problems. Vertical models are trained deeply on a particular domain's vocabulary, context, and logic, enabling more efficient and cost-effective operations.

Rishi Bal, CEO of BharatGen, highlights that domain-specific models consume fewer resources and are more accessible, even for smaller enterprises. "A strong foundational model combined with domain-specific training is more useful than either approach alone," Bal stated. Suraj Amonkar, Chief AI Research and Platforms Officer at Fractal, echoes this, noting their healthcare models show performance competitive with leading general models.

Khilan Haria, Chief Product Officer at Razorpay, adds that vertical models are crucial in fast-paced sectors like finance, requiring real-time decision-making. These models can process vast amounts of data and make decisions within milliseconds, critical for fraud detection and transaction approvals. For enterprises, the value lies in shared intelligence adapted to their specific data environments and operational processes.
