Indian Finance Minister: AI Can Influence Elections Unnoticed
India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has asked the central bank to explore possibilities for light-touch regulation of AI. She stated that advanced AI models can influence elections without voters being aware.

India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to investigate the potential for a "light-touch" regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, Sitharaman expressed concern that sophisticated AI models can influence public opinion and election outcomes without detection.
Sitharaman described a large language model, which she declined to name, as being "fully capable of influencing the opinion on the ground without the ground even sensing that they are being influenced." She clarified that this was a description of capability rather than an allegation of actual election manipulation. She also referenced a researcher's resignation from a leading AI lab due to concerns about the rapid race towards self-improving superintelligence.
The minister pointed to the European Union's AI Act and its transparency rules, which mandate labeling for synthetic content. She emphasized that entities operating outside the regulatory perimeter, such as fintech and technology firms, have their own responsibility to adhere to standards. Sitharaman also proposed the establishment of a unified industry platform for India's technology sector to provide the industry with a collective voice when engaging with foreign regulators.
During the event, Sitharaman also addressed tokenization and the role of the digital rupee. She mentioned a successful pilot of tokenizing a corporate bond, where the bond and the digital rupee moved simultaneously. Sitharaman urged the central bank to advance its digital rupee pilot programs and enhance its capabilities, highlighting its significance for future financial solutions.
