Indian firm LOHUM begins lithium mining in Zimbabwe
Indian mineral producer LOHUM has commenced lithium mining operations in Zimbabwe, aiming to bolster India's efforts to reduce reliance on imported minerals.

Indian sustainable critical mineral producer LOHUM has announced the commencement of its lithium mining operations in Zimbabwe. The company states it is the first Indian firm to initiate lithium operations globally. The first shipment of lithium ore has been dispatched from Zimbabwe's Matabeleland South Province.
LOHUM holds mining rights across ten spodumene-bearing blocks in Zimbabwe, covering approximately 1,100 hectares. The company plans to scale its annual lithium carbonate production capacity to roughly 30,000 tonnes within two to three years.
The firm aims to integrate its value chain from mine to cathode and recycling, with plans to develop concentration capacity in Zimbabwe to share added value. Founded by Rajat Verma, LOHUM produces sustainable energy transition materials through battery recycling, raw material refining, and battery repurposing.
The launch of operations in Zimbabwe supports India's national goal of reducing dependence on critical mineral imports. India currently imports nearly all its lithium-ion battery requirements. LOHUM's international operations advance the strategy to secure critical minerals through overseas mining asset acquisition.
