Indian Food Claims Face Scrutiny as PhonePe Eyes 2027 IPO

India's food safety regulator, FSSAI, has intensified its crackdown on health and purity claims made by food brands, particularly targeting terms like "100% natural" and "healthy." This move is directly impacting direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands that have leveraged such marketing language to build their market presence. Several companies have quietly removed or altered these absolute claims on their packaging in response to regulatory notices.

The situation has escalated as India's Supreme Court is now involved in defining the appearance of front-of-pack warning labels. The court has accepted FSSAI's proposal for a red hexagonal warning symbol for packaged foods high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats. However, further clarity is sought on scientific thresholds and potential confusion with existing labels, a decision that could reshape packaging and product information across the nation's food market.

Industry experts suggest that the stricter regulatory environment may force brands to substantiate their ingredient quality and transparency claims more rigorously. This could lead to increased product development costs and necessitate reformulation of existing products, potentially creating an advantage for brands with verifiable claims and transparent practices.

Separately, Walmart-backed fintech giant PhonePe is reportedly reviving its initial public offering (IPO) plans. The company is now targeting a listing between February and March 2027, with an aim for a valuation of $10 billion. PhonePe had previously postponed its IPO due to global market volatility and geopolitical tensions.
