India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), through its Digital India Corporation (DIC), advertised for a Director to lead the newly established IndiaAI Safety Institute. The position was advertised in May 2026 as a contractual role based in New Delhi, with applications closing on June 2, 2026.

The IndiaAI Safety Institute is a proposed body under the AI Governance Guidelines released in November 2025. Its mandate includes testing and evaluating AI systems for risks and advising policymakers on AI safety. This initiative is part of the broader IndiaAI Mission, aimed at fostering responsible AI development and deployment in the country.

Prior to this recruitment, in October 2024, the IndiaAI Mission had already selected eight research projects focused on responsible AI. These projects, chosen from over 2,000 proposals, covered areas such as machine unlearning, synthetic data generation, bias mitigation strategies, and frameworks for explainable AI.

The Director of the IndiaAI Safety Institute was expected to report to the Chief Operating Officer of the IndiaAI Mission. Key responsibilities included overseeing AI safety research, AI system evaluations, and the development of technical tools, guidelines, and standards tailored to the Indian context.
