Indian Space Startups Pursue Microgravity for Drug Discovery and Manufacturing

India's space technology sector is expanding beyond traditional satellite connectivity and launch vehicles to focus on microgravity applications for medical research and manufacturing. Several domestic startups are aiming to utilize space-based conditions for the development of novel drugs and biological materials.

Microgravity offers unique environments where researchers can grow ultra-pure protein crystals and explore new biological processes. These conditions are difficult or impossible to replicate on Earth, making space an attractive prospect for manufacturing high-value products, particularly medicines.

Odisha-based startup Serendipity recently flight-tested a prototype satellite designed to carry out critical steps in pharmaceutical manufacturing under microgravity. The satellite, named Alchemy, is intended to operate in space for weeks or months, returning manufactured substances to Earth. The company is bridging space technology with the pharmaceutical industry.

Other Indian players in this field include AnduraX, developing a reusable spaceplane for microgravity research and manufacturing, and Akashalabdhi, building modular space habitats. These companies aim to create infrastructure for the burgeoning microgravity economy. Supported by Riceberg Ventures, these ventures have the potential to play a significant role in the global microgravity market, which is projected for substantial growth.

India's public sector Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is also backing this trend with plans for its own modular space station to conduct multidisciplinary microgravity research. The confluence of India's growing space tech sector and its strong pharmaceutical industry is creating favorable conditions for the commercialization of microgravity.
