Microgravity in low Earth orbit significantly reduces convection, sedimentation, and buoyancy, factors that influence experiments on Earth. This environment allows for the growth of more uniform protein crystals and the study of biological processes, leading to the development of materials with properties difficult to replicate terrestrially. The focus is shifting from scientific observation to industrial production.
Several Indian spacetech companies are actively pursuing this frontier. Serendipity has flight-tested a satellite prototype housing an autonomous pharma factory. Ethereal is developing a reusable upper stage for microgravity experiments, while AnduraX is building spaceplanes for pharmaceutical firms. Akashalabdhi is constructing modular inflatable habitats.
Near-term commercial opportunities are expected to center on drug crystallization and protein folding. While global players like Merck and Redwire are already testing the model, India is in its early stages. Initiatives like IN-SPACe and the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station could facilitate the transition of experiments from labs to repeatable missions.
Despite the growing momentum, startups face structural challenges such as high launch costs, limited access to orbital platforms, and lengthy validation cycles. Regulatory approvals, payload recovery, mission reliability, and specialized talent further add to the complexity. The sector's success hinges on Indian startups' ability to transform microgravity into a viable production floor.
