India's Aadhaar Explores International Interoperability, New 'Aadhaar Light' Product
India's digital identity authority, UIDAI, is working on proof-of-concept projects for international Aadhaar interoperability and developing a new 'Aadhaar Light' product for smaller businesses.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is actively pursuing international interoperability for its Aadhaar digital identity system. The authority is currently engaged in proof-of-concept (POC) projects aimed at enabling Aadhaar's compatibility with systems in other countries.
UIDAI CEO Saurabh Vijay announced these plans at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026. He stated the authority's ambition to "make Aadhaar international" and is exploring the necessary technological and infrastructural frameworks. "Some POCs are already happening," Vijay commented. However, he did not disclose details regarding the specific countries or systems involved in these POCs, nor did he provide a timeline for the international Aadhaar system.
Alongside its international expansion efforts, UIDAI is preparing to launch "Aadhaar Light," a new product designed for smaller businesses that handle a lower volume of authentication requests. Guidelines for this product are expected to be released "very soon." Vijay described the initiative as a "work in progress" and part of UIDAI's broader strategy to streamline authentication and KYC processes in 2026.
Furthermore, UIDAI is reviewing policy changes that could extend Aadhaar system benefits to Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). Vijay suggested that this move could attract additional investment into India. While Aadhaar has solidified its position as one of the world's largest digital identity frameworks within India, these new initiatives signal the authority's intent to broaden its global reach and utility.
