India's Data Center Sector Expansion Driven by AI and Cloud Growth
India's data center sector is undergoing significant expansion, fueled by artificial intelligence, cloud adoption, and digital transformation. The rising demand necessitates new AI-ready infrastructure.

India's data center sector is entering a phase of accelerated build-out, driven by cloud migration, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, and enterprise digitization. While India produces a substantial portion of global data activity, its hosted data center capacity remains considerably lower than mature markets, presenting one of Asia's most significant digital infrastructure opportunities.
Installed data center capacity in India is projected to grow from approximately 778 MW in FY23 to nearly 1,900 MW by FY26. The sector is shifting from a colocation-centric base towards hyperscale campuses, AI-ready facilities, and high-density cloud infrastructure. Key hubs include Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi NCR, with Hyderabad, Pune, and selected Tier 2 locations also gaining traction due to land availability, power access, and state incentives.
The next wave of demand is more power-intensive than previous cycles. AI workloads require dense GPU clusters, high-bandwidth networks, liquid cooling, and robust power redundancy, altering the economics of each megawatt added. The market size is forecast to expand from an estimated USD 1.7 billion in FY26 to USD 6.8 billion by FY30 and over USD 14.9 billion by FY2035.
AI-centric data centers necessitate a redesign of conventional facilities, featuring heavier floor loading, higher ceiling clearance, and advanced cooling systems. Rack density is increasing, typically ranging from 30 to 80 kW, demanding new solutions for structural design, electrical equipment, and cooling. This evolution prioritizes deployable capacity and efficient power utilization over mere installed capacity.
