India's Instant Service Platforms Face Worker Scrutiny Amid Growth

India's "convenience economy," fueled by significant capital and aggressive discounting, is gearing up for a busy festive season. However, the rapid growth of instant service platforms is bringing scrutiny to the working conditions of gig economy workers.

Workers in the instant help sector report that a significant portion of their shift is spent not on active tasks but on waiting near high-demand areas, remaining logged in to qualify for assignments, and commuting between locations. While platforms promise swift service by leveraging worker proximity, employees claim that idle time often goes unpaid.

Initially marketed as a pathway to stable earnings, compensation models are reportedly shifting. Gig workers now allege that pay is increasingly tied to logged-in hours and performance tiers. This, coupled with missed shifts, personal emergencies, and a lack of consistent bookings, leads to unpredictable take-home income. Workers also cite algorithmic control over job allocation and rating systems, pressuring them to accept jobs to avoid account suspensions or reduced payouts. Access to basic amenities like restrooms and safe waiting areas is also reported as limited.

Safety concerns are particularly pronounced for women workers, who may face rapid assignment to unfamiliar locations with little time for risk assessment. The pressure to maintain high responsiveness for ratings and account access can make declining a job a costly decision. Furthermore, benefits such as paid leave or emergency medical support are notably absent.

The upcoming festive season will serve as a critical test for these platforms, examining whether they can balance customer convenience with worker welfare. While discounts may drive short-term bookings, long-term retention is expected to hinge on fair pay and adequate safety support for the workforce.
