India's IT Ministry Expands Social Media Content Labeling Requirements

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has advised social media platforms to label and contextualize manipulated, synthetically generated, or misleading content, especially when presented as depicting a current event. This extends previous regulations.

8 October 2026

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has expanded its content labeling guidelines for social media platforms. The new advisory, dated October 8, 2026, requests platforms to prioritize complaints from "authorized government agencies" concerning content with "potential implications for public order."

The advisory instructs social media services to "identify and appropriately label/contextualize manipulated, synthetically generated, or misleading content." Particular attention should be paid to content presented as depicting a current event. This extends the labeling regime introduced in February 2026, which focused on "synthetically generated information" (SGI).

The ministry emphasizes that existing rules already require platforms to prevent the dissemination of information "likely to cause public disorder or incite the commission of an offense." The new advisory calls for specific focus on archived photos and videos presented as current events, digitally altered or synthetically generated media, impersonations of public authorities or persons, and content likely to incite violence or unlawful activity.

Furthermore, platforms are urged to take measures to prevent the spread of unlawful information, prioritize government complaints, and enhance their content monitoring and grievance redressal systems. The guidelines take immediate effect and aim to ensure that content capable of causing "widespread public confusion, panic, violence, or disturbance of public order" is addressed expeditiously, while respecting lawful expression.
