India's MeitY Asks Meta to Review Content Recommendation Algorithms

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has instructed Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to review its recommendation algorithms. The directive aims to prevent disproportionate exposure to limited narratives and strengthen oversight of content that could incite public disorder or violence.

The advisory, issued on October 10, specifically asks Meta to provide adequate context for visuals depicting ongoing public events. This is particularly relevant when the authenticity, date, location, or circumstances of such content may not be readily apparent to users.

MeitY also called for a review of Meta's content ranking and recommendation mechanisms to stop potentially misleading or out-of-context material from being disproportionately amplified. The ministry emphasized that recommendation systems should not lead to users being exposed to a narrow set of narratives and should instead offer a diverse range of credible information.

Furthermore, the advisory requested stronger systems for rapidly identifying and escalating content that gains significant traction through recommendations and could cause widespread confusion, apprehension, or disturbances to public order. Meta has been asked to implement these measures with immediate effect.
