India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Appoints Six New Examiners of Electronic Evidence
India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has designated six new laboratories as authorized examiners of electronic evidence under the IT Act. These appointments aim to enhance the reliability of digital evidence in legal proceedings.

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has appointed six new laboratories as official examiners of electronic evidence, effective July 9, under the provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000.
Of the six newly designated labs, five will focus on computer and mobile device forensics. These include central forensic science laboratories in Kolkata, Mumbai, and Goa, along with cyber forensic labs in New Delhi and Jaipur. Notably, the Border Security Force's Central Drone Forensic Lab in Delhi will specialize in drone-related evidence.
The appointments are made under Section 79A of the IT Act, which empowers the central government to designate officials or institutes as Examiners of Electronic Evidence. These experts provide professional opinions on digital proof to courts and other authorities, ensuring its admissibility.
Recent legislative developments, including the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) of 2023, emphasize the importance of verifying the authenticity of digital evidence, such as WhatsApp chats and CCTV footage. The newly appointed examiners will play a crucial role in meeting these requirements and ensuring the integrity of digital records.
