India's NTPC to Deploy 247Solar's Thermal Technology
India's largest utility, NTPC, has signed a power purchase agreement with 247Solar for its first commercial project utilizing advanced solar thermal technology for round-the-clock clean power.

NTPC Limited, India's largest electric utility, has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with U.S.-based 247Solar to deploy the latter's advanced solar thermal technology. This deployment marks 247Solar's first commercial project, designed to generate clean electricity continuously. The initiative aims to address the intermittency issues associated with conventional renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
The project will be located at the Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan, one of the world's largest solar energy hubs. NTPC intends to reduce its reliance on coal and meet India's escalating electricity demand. 247Solar's technology captures solar heat using mirrors, storing it in ceramic pellets for up to 20 hours. This stored heat then drives turbines to produce electricity without combustion.
The technology offers advantages over previous concentrated solar power systems, including lower costs, faster deployment, and simpler design. The system ensures consistent electricity generation and can also utilize liquid or gaseous fuels, such as natural gas or hydrogen, ensuring uninterrupted power supply even during cloudy periods or at night.
The collaboration between NTPC and 247Solar is part of India's broader strategy to enhance the availability of clean and reliable energy. Successful implementation of this project could pave the way for wider adoption in India and serve as a model for other nations facing similar challenges with grid stability and renewable energy integration.
