India's Telecom Network Grows by 6.2 Million Connections in July 2026; MNP Requests Near 16 Million
India added 6.2 million telephone connections in July 2026, bringing the total subscriber base to 1.354 billion, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The month also saw nearly 16 million mobile number portability requests.
India's total telephone subscriber base reached 1.354 billion in July 2026, marking an increase of 6.2 million connections from the previous month, as per data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). During the same period, the number of mobile number portability (MNP) requests surged to approximately 15.98 million.
The wireless subscriber base grew by 6.02 million to 1.306 billion, while wireline connections saw a modest increase of 0.19 million, reaching 48.01 million. Overall tele-density improved to 94.68%. Notably, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscriptions crossed 13.2 million, with rural users slightly outnumbering urban users.
Bharti Airtel led in new mobile subscriber additions for July, adding 2.69 million connections. Reliance Jio followed with 2.45 million additions. Vodafone Idea and BSNL also reported subscriber gains, while MTNL experienced a slight loss. Despite these additions, Jio remains the largest operator with 506.03 million subscribers, followed by Airtel at 489.49 million, Vodafone Idea at 199.06 million, and BSNL at 93.18 million.
Broadband subscriptions increased by 0.64% to reach 1.094 billion. The vast majority, 1.028 billion, were mobile wireless connections. Jio dominated the broadband market with 535.12 million subscribers, trailed by Airtel with 384.23 million and Vodafone Idea with 129.96 million. The MNP request volume of nearly 16 million indicates significant churn within the sector.
